  Saying Goodbye - Involuntary Separations Made Easier and Safer!

  An involuntary separation is stressful for the employee, the people delivering the news and the affected coworkers. Unfortunately, it can often mean more than stress and create real threats to the workplace. Disgruntled former or soon-to-be former employees can cause harm or violence to your organization.

  Fortunately, there are ways to prepare for a respectful and safe, involuntary separation – before, during, and after the conversation. Looking at involuntary separation from an HR and threat perspective, Melissa’s presentation will include hands-on tips for how to say goodbye, when and how to stay connected to former employees, with a checklist you can easily adapt to your own workplace. Join and add tools to your toolbox for safety and respectfully ending employment relationships.

  Melissa Muir, JD, joined Pinkerton in 2023 as a Senior Threat Management Consultant representing Human Resources on the global team to deliver objective, informed, and holistic threat management solutions. 

  Melissa has worked for more than two decades as an HR professional in the federal courts, as well as HR director in the cities of Seattle and Shoreline in Washington. She is proud of making a difference at both organizational and national levels in workplace violence prevention and bridging the gap between security and human resources.

  Using the strategic application of leadership, creativity, and innovation, Melissa champions the art and science of building safety. Her unique insight leads to meaningful multidisciplinary partnerships and to bringing prevention upstream into our people practices.

  Melissa builds on a foundation in communication – from crisis and disaster communications to professional writing – to help leaders prevent violence through increasing engagement and trust. For more than 10 years, Melissa has held a leadership role within the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. Her profound impact as a speaker has been globally recognized, earning her the title of "Most Inspirational Speaker" for presentations delivered across three continents to all ATAP organizations worldwide.

  Melissa holds an MBA from the University of Washington and her law degree, with a focus on employment law and mediation, from the Seattle University School of Law.
